Gabriel Ybarra

PhD-Clinical Psychologist

Raised in a rural setting in central California, Gabriel was one of four children. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of California at Berkeley before earning his Doctoral degree in Psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2000. He completed his Clinical Psychology Internship and worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow researcher at the University of California at San Francisco.  In 2001, he accepted an academic position at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Florida.  

He has extensive research and practice experience with individual adults, children and adolescents, and the elderly on issues including difficulty life transitions, maturation, parenting, divorce, chronic pain, depression, anxiety, AD/HD, learning disabilities, and giftedness and superior intelligence.  

He has sizable experience with current or former military personnel and their families. Currently, Dr. Ybarra is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of North Florida, where he teaches psychology courses, conducts research, and serves the community in applied ways. 

 As a researcher in clinical psychology, he has published studies of a variety of topics, including the use of blanket attachments for young children, adult and parenting stress response, children's reactions adult conflict, the impact of domestic violence on child intelligence, fatherhood, attachments during childhood, effective ways to parent children, and online bullying. 

Outside of the classroom, laboratory, and his clinical practice, Dr. Ybarra is an avid reader who also enjoys kayaking, hiking, guitar, gardening, walking his dogs, and tackling do-it-yourself projects around his home and yard.  As a husband and father, he enjoys spending time with his wife, son and two daughters. As a Christian, he is a committed member of his Catholic parish. He warmly invites and helps individuals of all faiths to use their own spiritual and religious beliefs to help address their psychological challenges.
